Andrew Carnegie's philanthropy gave many cities and towns their first permanent
library buildings. These buildings came with strings attached: A city had to
provide a suitable site for the building and support a public library annually
at a cost of at least 10 percent of the Carnegie grant.
On April 25 1911, the foundation provided the citizens of Union $5,500, with
construction completed and the new library opening the following year.
The library sits in the heart of the Union Main Street Historic District.
The downtown historic district was added to the
National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and is one a several locations
within the city limits on the National Register.
